Shawnee Police detectives are seeing success with a new tool for their department. Leads Online, a Web-based investigation system, was founded in 2000 as a public-private partnership between law enforcement and business owners to help solve cases involving property.

Using the site recently, Shawnee Detective Kent Borcherding was able to solve two burglary cases.

The site uses a tracking system to match possible stolen property with items that may have been pawned at participating Leads Online businesses.

Leads Online expedites investigative time, he said, because typing in a serial number is faster than calling pawn shops individually to ask if a specific item is there. And while they can search specific areas, cities and counties, for example, EZ Pawn is the only Shawnee area pawn shop currently participating in Leads Online.

Borcherding said the new system is changing the way they'll probe property crimes.
