A new ordinance may go into effect later this month in the mountains--that could force all pawn shops and some second hand dealers, to electronically keep track of all incoming items--to track down stolen goods.
At Alan's Pawn And Jewelry near downtown Asheville, they've been fighting for the city to strengthen its regulations regarding those who sell used goods.
"There are always these second hand dealers who get to do the same things we do, but they've never been required to report and get information from those selling the items," said Tonia Sheppard of Alan's Jewelry And Pawn.
Alan's is one of a few stores already providing police with that real time information online at a site called LeadsOnline.com.
The city has already met with business owners--and with police backing the plan--it has a good chance of moving forward.
This is scheduled to go before city council Jan. 25th. It could be voted on that night.
This computer network is being used in other parts of the country as well, so it could be something that comes to the Upstate down the road.
