Computer program at metal recyclers helps Springfield police nab 45 suspected thieves

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Metal thefts are still high in the city but Springfield's efforts to beef up enforcement are working. The Springfield City Council got an update on those efforts at its lunch meeting on Tuesday.

Since July, all six of the city's licensed metal recycling yards have been using a computer system to track all metal that comes into their shops. That "Leads Online" program, as it's called, helped police investigate 67 cases involving metal thefts. It's led to charges against 45 people.
