The rate of violent crime in Frisco has barely changed over the past 15 years. And that's great news. The number of offenses has gone up over the years, as expected, but so has the population. That means very minor fluctuations in the actual crime rate. Under the Uniform Crime Reporting program, violent crimes consist of murders, rapes, robberies and assults. Crime statistics show that in 1996, the city had 0.99 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. By 2010, the city had 1.07 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Frisco is plagued much more by property crimes. "They steal from your house, they steal from your cars and they steal from the stores," Police Chief Todd Renshaw said at Monday's Town Hall meeting. The rate for property crimes in Frisco last year was 22.04 crimes per 1,000 residents. That compares with a rate of 19 crimes per 1,000 people in 1996. The Frisco Police Department is working to reduce property crimes on multiple fronts. The department recently issued a news release encouraging residents to use a free service called LeadsOnline to record serial numbers and upload images of items such as cell phones, electronics, jewelry and other valuables. According to the news release: "Investigators have cleared numerous cases by locating stolen property on LeadsOnline. It is the department's hope that by bringing an awareness of its effectiveness and use by police that more citizens will register their property and make it easier for police - and themselves - to locate stolen property."
