YAKIMA – There was a time when getting your property back after a burglary was highly unlikely.
However, police tell us technology and strict legislation has increased your odds, particularly if you're someone who keeps track of serial numbers.
Those numbers have become easier to track and have made it harder for crooks to cash in on their loot.
In fact, Action New discovered the days of using pawn shops to fence stolen property are long gone.
"It makes it more difficult because if you're a criminal, while I'm standing here taking your items and examining and entering all that info into the computer," said Diane Mabry, who owns Bestway Pawn Mart Inc. "That's a long time for someone to stand here and thieves don't really want to be in one place for too long. They might get recognized or an officer might walk in the door...we have officers in here all the time.
According to police, there are three to four sources used to track items or get an idea of where they may be.
Pawn Shops being just one of them.
