St. Johns County, FL – A retirement home security guard is charged with stealing from the people he was supposed to protect.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says 20-year-old Andrew Schmidt took jewelry, money, and silver coins and bars from an 82-year-old resident of the Glenmoor Retirement Community on Towerview Dr., where he worked.
The victim noticed some jewelry missing from his jewelry box in his bedroom over about three months, at which point the Sheriff's Office began investigating. When they found Schmidt had pawned items matching the description of the missing ones, they questioned him and ultimately arrested him yesterday.
He allegedly pawned those items at three St. Augustine shops.
Detectives say he pawned other items as well, although they have yet to figure out the other victims involved.
Schmidt will appear in court this morning on charges of burglary, grand theft, exploiting the elderly, dealing in stolen property and defrauding a pawn broker. Other charges are pending further investigation.
