Birmingham Police Solve Home Invasion Robbery and Kidnapping Case With LeadsOnline

January 14, 2014

Birmingham PD arrested a man for allegedly robbing and kidnapping a Birmingham woman during a home invasion. The suspect allegedly entered the woman's home after using a false name and story involving his lost dog, and then proceeded to tie her hands and feet together with a pair of shoelaces. Police say a critical piece of evidence in solving this violent crime was having the serial number to the Xbox that was stolen during the robbery along with a bicycle.

"When I entered the Xbox serial number in LeadsOnline, I was able to immediately identify who pawned the item, which eventually lead me to the suspect," said Detective George Montgomery.

LeadsOnline is a nationwide system used by law enforcement to track stolen property that may have been sold across city, county and even state line.

"With LeadsOnline we are able to solve crimes faster," Detective Montgomery said. "The old fashioned way included manually entering and searching pawn tickets, and now it's a much simpler process for everyone."

With the start of the New Year, Police recommend citizens log their serial numbers in the free citizen property inventory system, ReportIt, offered through LeadsOnline. ReportIt allows Birmingham citizens to securely store their serial numbers, item descriptions, pictures, and scans of receipts so items can be easily identified in the event of theft or loss. The ReportIt system is accessible only to the citizen users and cannot be viewed by police without the user's consent. Users can register for an account by visiting

The suspect is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail awaiting trial. He was charged with robbery, kidnapping and burglary 1. Information in this release is in reference to Birmingham Police Department case number 2013-194358.

More than 100 agencies in Alabama and more than 2,800 agencies nationwide use LeadsOnline to instantly search for stolen property that may have been sold at secondhand stores, pawn shops, internet drop off stores, or scrap metal recyclers, across all 50 states.
