Law enforcement in Raleigh County partners with area pawn shops to prevent crime.
According to Beckley Police pawn shops within city limits are required to report any pawns or purchases to an online system called Leads Online, which is used to record serial numbers, descriptions and the value of the item.
Business owners are required to see a government issued photo ID from customers that pawn or sell merchandise.
The information from Leads Online helps police match merchandise to recently stolen property reported from burglaries.
Detective David Allard with Beckley Police brought leads online to the area in 2010. He says it's helped track pawn related crime significantly.
