Weslaco Police Encourages Use of New Crime-Fighting App

By Ryan Nelson

June 29, 2017

WESLACO – The Weslaco Police Department is encouraging people to use a new app called "ReportIt."

The application lets users enter identifying information on their valuables. In case they're stolen, law enforcement will better be able to match owners with their belongings.

"ReportIt is a great app that allows citizens to basically store all of their property," said Weslaco Police Department spokesperson Eric Hernandez. "It allows them to store from date of purchase, to serial numbers, to the store that it was purchased."

Jose Espinoza's brother-in-law recently passed away. He's now looking after his brother-in-law's home in Weslaco. He said it was burglarized in recent years.

"People take things from other people they really shouldn't, you know?" said Espinoza. "And it hurts when I see things like that going on."

CHANNEL 5 NEWS noticed chains on the patio furniture and security camera signs in the windows. Espinoza told us security is always a priority for his family.

"My dad always told us, 'You know, take care of your house.' It's your most valuable possession that you'll ever have." he said.

Victims of crimes don't always have documentation available when the unforeseen happens. ReportIt will allow people like Espinoza to save important information on their items in the digital space.

"People might be a victim of a theft or burglary," said Hernandez. "They come in wanting to provide us with information, whether it's serial numbers, they don't have any documentation."

In addition to serial numbers, ReportIt allows users to input date of purchase and scanned copies of their receipts. Law enforcement will be able to better match owners with their belongings if they're recovered.

"If you enter this and you have an actual serial number, identifying information to this product. It makes it a lot easier to locate," said Hernandez. "And once it is located, we can find the proper owner."

"You know, everybody values their valuables." Espinoza said. "I think we would be very interested in it."

It's free to register for ReportIt. Users can input information of up to 100 items free of charge.
