Website helps recover stolen property

February 4, 2013

SPRINGFIELD – Many times if something like your iPhone gets stolen, it's too late. But one website is helping police put stolen items back in the right hands.

Springfield police are asking residents to sign up for "Report It."

Users can register important information about cell phones, electronics and other valuable items.

In the event someone does steal it, Springfield Deputy Chief Cliff Buscher says cops can track it down fast.

Creating an account is free. Users can upload pictures and enter the items' serial numbers. Buscher said that's all the information they need to recover stolen property.

The system also checks local pawn shops to see if the serial numbers match.

"We'll be getting hits back saying 'Hey, this stuff's stolen'," said Buscher. "It's already coming back while we're doing the paperwork. It'll help immensely."

"Report It" has helped SPD recover thousands of dollars of stolen merchandise.
