July 28, 2014

It's free for you to use and it will help police recover your stolen property.

The Greensboro Police Department wants you to use ReportIt, a secure online national database that helps keep track of your valuables or personal property.

ReportIt allows you to enter in an unlimited number of serial numbers for items of value in your home or car. You can also include item descriptions, pictures, and receipts for any of your valuables you want to list. Police say photos of jewelry is especially helpful to them.

If a thief breaks-into your home or car you can access your account and then give the information to police Sgt. T.K. Brown, Criminal Investigations Division says, "When a person provides us with a description of stolen property, we can enter it into LeadsOnline, an online system that works with police across the country to track and recover stolen property."

The program also shares information about stolen property sold to pawn and secondhand shops.

Greensboro Police says the system has helped them solve several hundred burglary cases.
